1. Introduction
The history of artificial intelligence has been marked by periodic paradigm shifts—from symbolic reasoning to expert systems, from neural networks to deep learning, and most recently, to large language models (LLMs). Each shift brought capabilities previously thought impossible, yet the fundamental goal of artificial general intelligence remains elusive.
Today's most advanced AI systems, despite their remarkable performance on benchmarks and practical tasks, remain narrow in a crucial sense: they operate as isolated entities, controlled by external systems, incapable of true coordination with peers. A GPT-4 cannot meaningfully collaborate with another GPT-4. A Claude cannot form a working relationship with other Claudes. Each inference is stateless, each interaction isolated.
This isolation is not merely an implementation detail—it is a fundamental architectural constraint that limits what these systems can achieve. Human intelligence, by contrast, is inherently social.
